My First Three Months as a Graduate Software Engineer
Published on by David Mortiboy
Greetings! Allow me to introduce myself – I’m David, and I’m META’s newest software engineer. I graduated from the University of Hull in July 2017 with a first-class honours degree in Computer Science.
Eager to take my first steps in the business world, I put in my application to work at META towards the beginning of the year, and, after a couple of friendly chats over the phone and an interview involving a huge mug of hot chocolate, I was delighted to be made an offer of employment.
On my first day, I was greeted with a whole load of presents such as headphones, a laptop, some Uncle Ben’s rice (all the essentials) and I spent some time getting to know my new team and finding out what projects I would be working on. I felt very welcomed by everybody and found it easy to get stuck into my role.
What I have enjoyed most
I have been able to take the lead on a couple of large projects which has given me the opportunity to contribute to the full software development lifecycle, including gathering requirements from clients, drawing up wireframe designs, setting up database architecture, QA testing, and deployment to live servers.
In the dev team, we take an agile approach to project management. This includes daily stand-ups, and valuing continuous feedback from our clients over blindly following a rigid specification. I enjoy this level of flexibility because it allows me to work towards a number of short-term goals which means I receive constant reassurance that I am doing a good job.
Highlights so far
Last month I was fortunate to be able to attend the Shopify Partners expo in Birmingham which gave me the chance to learn from experts in the field and network with likeminded people, some of whom had travelled internationally to be there. As of a few weeks ago, we moved to larger premises due to expansion. Being part of the moving process is something that not many graduates get to do.
Looking to the future
It excites me greatly to think of how far we have come as a company in a short space of time. We’re expanding faster than ever and I hope to be able to take over as development team lead eventually and support the future graduates who follow in my footsteps. I want to drive us to take on more development work that will help our clients’ businesses to grow with us - technology is improving year-on-year and the demand for up-to-date analysis tools is of paramount importance to ensure that companies maximise their revenue and keep up with the competition.
I’m very grateful to all my colleagues at META for making me feel valued in my first three months and offering me guidance when I need it. I hope to continue working with you all for many more months to come!
